orz

What do the 3 letters mean to you?

Do you know what it represents in online chat?

(don’t cheat and google it)

Well..I came across this several times..but didn’t bother to find out what it meant. I roughly figured it meant FML or something close..but didn’t know what the acronym represented.

Until I was doing research for my COM254 Interpersonal Communication presentation..on nonverbal communication. Then I realised that I was wrong all along..

Haha!! So it’s not an acronym but actually EMOTICON!! Awesome huh. The ‘o’ is the head, ‘r’ is the arms, and ‘z’ is the legs of the person kneeling on the floor. Initially it just represented a kneeling person..but later on it was used to show a person banging his head on the floor out of extreme depression/desperation/helplessness. As you can probably guess from the manga style drawings, this originated from Japan..and has since been quite widely used.

For example in Taiwan..

It has been extended to be associated with the phrase ‘good guy’. Basically a bunch of guys got together for some manly chit chat and realised that their experiences of being rejected for a date were roughly the same..along the lines of:

Girl: I’m sorry..you’re a good guy so I’m sure you can find someone better.

Boy: (无语)

read: 无语=speechless

So..obviously the boy is like zomgwtfbbq because he has just been rejected..yet the girl of his dreams put it so nicely that he can’t do anything about it. And the best solution he can think of is to bang his head on the floor (instead of having some man talk with his guy friends or seek helpful advice from his girl friends) (guys being guys, of course).

Come to think of it..this may hold true in more ways than one..

After all..there’s this saying:

男孩不坏,女孩不爱。

But I would like to add on to this phrase.

男孩不坏,女孩不爱,天理何在?!?!
